Our family has a new small business that we have been trying to get off the ground for the past two years. Both my son and husband are former union members who had little or no work for the last four years thanks to the slow economy, so we decided to start a new online business. Having to purchase insurance through the Affordable Care Act will be a financial hardship for our new business. Currently we are paying cash when we need to go to a doctor, and that no longer will be an option. We don’t know where we will come up with the money to buy this insurance which has increased from the original amount we were told of approximately $2,500.00/person to now over $5,000.00/person. All of us believe that while there needs to be some changes made to the current medical insurance policies in this country – the Affordable Care Act is not the way to do it.
Instead, we would like to see insurance companies have to compete nationwide for everyone’s business – this would drive prices down and force them be competitive again. We do agree that there should be NO exclusions for pre-existing conditions – if the rest of the insureds have to pay a bit more in premiums to cover the higher risk – so be it. Lastly, we would like to say that we believe that this law is unconstitutional. The American people cannot be made to purchase a product that they may or may not need or want simply because the government mandates it. If this law is allowed to stand as is, it will create a dangerous precedence for future mandates that can be made by the federal government to keep the private lives of citizens under their thumb.
