The Affordable Care Act, or as it is more commonly called, Obamacare, is destroying America’s economy. My husband and I own several small businesses in which we struggle to provide healthcare insurance for the employees already. We will not be able to provide this insurance once Obamacare is implemented, so we really do not know what we will end up doing at this point. We have been weighing the options for several months. One option is that my husband and I both are over 65, so we could just retire and close the businesses down. Another option is to keep the business in operation, but turn all employees into part-timers. This option may work, but I am sure there are some that really need a full-time job and would not be able to afford the salary cut. This puts us in a moral dilemma. Our only other option would be to look for a buyer that might be able to provide insurance to the employees. We really don’t like the idea of closing down because there are several hundred employees who would lose their job, and these people have worked for us a long time, but when you cannot afford to do something, you are faced with difficult choices: shut down or go deeply into debt. It is hard to accept that a once great nation has come to this. There is not much incentive anymore to open a business or even to run an existing one – the costs simply outweigh the potential benefits.
