I retired in 2006, and my company offered a retirement health plan that covered a Supplemental Health Plan that included drug coverage. There was a fee for this plan, but it was nominal. In 2011 my company cancelled this plan due to the mass of governmental rules and regulations that had to be met under the Affordable Healthcare Act. I am now covered under Extend Health which requires me to purchase drug coverage under Medicare Part D and my Medicare supplemental had to be under a Medigap plan, therefore putting all my health care coverage under direct control of the government. Many companies will use the requirements of the Affordable Healthcare Act as a tool to get out from under previous plans they offered which became burdensome due to rising healthcare costs. The employee loses either way! Rising healthcare costs and the affordability of healthcare coverage can be controlled at the marketplace if the government would just get out of the way and let free enterprise solve the problem with increased competition, such as between states.
