My husband became self-employed in 2010. Previously, our family of four had been insured through his employer. Because of a pre-existing condition, my husband was refused coverage by BCBS. Since that time, we have investigated several ways to obtain insurance coverage for him. Although, we can now find companies to write coverage for him, the premiums will be in excess of $20,000 annually. There are very few people who can afford such a premium and we are certainly not among them. My husband went without health insurance for three years. Earlier this year, he joined a Christian medical sharing program in order to meet the requirements for coverage under Obamacare. Meanwhile, our two children and I have had health insurance through BCBS. In order to make it affordable, we have a $10,000 per person deductible. We are in essence, self-insured. I was recently notified by BCBS that our plan will not be available after January 1, 2014. They have changed the renewal date to November 1, 2013 which will give us until November 1, 2014 to decide on a new plan. From reports coming in from around the U.S., I suspect a new plan under Obamacare will cause our premiums to soar. I was told that if I liked my plan, I would be able to keep it. That was an out-and-out lie. Although I don’t like my high deductible, at least I can afford the premiums and pay the out-of-pocket expenses for my family’s health care needs. Under Obamacare, I will not be able to afford the premiums and I will not be eligible for subsidy. Maybe I will ask my Congressman for a job so that I can afford my premiums.
